Potted History 7 -

Snetterton photo of the day. We have recently seen the 42nd running of the world famous Formula Ford Festival, at Brands Hatch - but it is an event that started at Snetterton, held at the circuit from 1972 - 1975 before the move to Brands Hatch.

The grid for the final lines up at the inaugural Festival on 5th November 1972, held on the old 2.71 mile circuit. Jim Russell school graduate and future Indy 500 winner Danny Sullivan is on pole position (nearest to the pits) in his Falconer bodied Team Catnic Elden Mk8, with fellow American David Loring in the middle in his Merlyn Mk20. The second Falconer Elden, the Ippokampos entry of Australian Buzz Buzaglo is on the outside. South African Richard Sterne shares row 2 in his Titan with Ian Taylor's Dulon LD9-Rowland ( car 66 ).

Englishman Taylor beat the foreign opposition ahead of him to become the first Festival winner. It was a one day event for the 100 entries, four short practice sessions for each heat ( all held over 5 laps ), two semis (10 laps) and a 25 lap final over 67 miles, much longer than Festival finals today. We can see the gap in the pits which allowed the cars onto the track from the assembly area beyond in those days
