JHR’s Matthew Rees set the fastest time in qualifying at Snetterton, as the Welshman claimed his first pole of the season.
Rees’ effort of 1m39.616s came inside the final couple of minutes of a frantic session in which multiple drivers took turns to head the times, and is quicker than the outright lap record for the circuit, which dates back to 2011.
For the race two grid, based on each driver’s second quickest lap times, Rodin Carlin’s Callum Voisin claimed pole, ahead of Douglas Motorsport’s Tymek Kucharczyk, though the Pole has a three place grid penalty from Spa.
In the 20-minute session, Rees was just a tenth faster than Voisin, with testing pace-setter Kucharczyk taking third for Douglas Motorsport, and less than a tenth further back.
Hitech Pulse-Eight’s Alex Dunne had several spells at the top of the times, but had to settle for fourth, 0.034s away from Kucharczyk and 0.044s clear of Arden VRD’s Noah Ping, who enjoyed by far his best qualifying session of the year in fifth place, but is another to carry a three place grid penalty from Spa.
His teammate James Hedley topped much of the session and ended up sixth, 0.012s away from Ping, and 0.085s ahead of JHR Development’s championship leader Joseph Loake in seventh.
Nico Christodoulou ensured all three Arden VRD’s were inside the top-eight, ahead of Rodin Carlin’s Costa Toparis and Hitech Pulse-Eight’s Souta Arao who completed a top-10 covered by half a second.
For the race two grid, Voisin took pole a tenth ahead of Kucharczyk, with Dunne third and Ping confirming his pace with fourth.
Rees drops to fifth on the race two grid while Toparis climbs to sixth, ahead of Hedley, Loake, McKenzy Cresswell and Arao.
The first race of the weekend is due to commence at 15.00, with full live streaming coverage starting 20 minutes beforehand.
