BTCC Snetterton Race 2: Hill dominates in changing conditions

26 May 2024

Jake Hill vaults himself back into the championship fight with a second win of the day in an unpredictable Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship race at Snetterton this afternoon.

Overcoming a ten second penalty, Hill took victory by 6.260s over Dan Cammish for NAPA Racing UK with LKQ Euro Car Parts with SYNETIQ driver Josh Cook in third in tricky changeable conditions.

Following a short delay caused by a heavy rain shower, the race eventually got underway with a slippery track and glaring sunshine. Following his race one victory, Hill began on pole on wet tyres with Bobby Thompson alongside in second. Due to start third had been reigning champion, NAPA Racing UK’s Ashley Sutton, but he pitted at the end of the formation lap for slick tyres along with multiple other drivers including his title rivals Tom Ingram and Colin Turkington

Hill led away from the grid as they took the start with Thompson immediately falling behind TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK driver Andrew Watson and Cammish. Hill began to build a small gap as he and Thompson were both awarded 10-second penalties for false starts.

Hill was in a race of his own and in the complicated conditions, he pulled out seconds each lap on Watson behind. After six laps, he had seven seconds in hand. At the same time heavy rain returned and the slick tyre gamble, taken by nearly half the grid, was now just about surviving on track.

Hill continued to extend the gap over Watson and by Lap 8, he had the required ten seconds gap. As the heavy rain continued, Watson dropped it coming out of Brundle and fell out of the podium positions, Cammish was promoted to second with Thompson third on the road but with Cook close behind.

Hill crossed the line with 16.260s back to Dan Cammish which was cut to 6.260s after the applied penalty. A truly dominant drive.

Tom Chilton for Team BRISTOL STREET MOTORS recovered from a run through the grass at Brundle to finish fourth, after Thompson's penalty dropped him down the order. Mikey Doble finished fifth in the Evans Halshaw Power Maxed Racing Vauxhall Astra with Watson in sixth. Thompson was demoted to seventh.

Cook's teammate Aiden Moffat finished eighth with Sam Osborne and Daryl DeLeon rounding out the top ten.

Sutton’s gamble for slick tyres did not pay off and his race was ended following a collision with the wall at Williams. Championship contenders Turkington and Ingram both finished outside the top-ten. Sutton still leads the standings with 110 points. Hill is now level on points with Colin Turkington on 102 points with Ingram in fourth position on 96.
